Heroes of Speed 2009 preview

From motorsports writer Dean Corrodus

The 2009 season of circuit racing organized by the Jamaica Race Driver’s Club (JRDC) at Dover Raceway is set to come to an exciting conclusion on Heroes Day, October 19, when the final race meet of the year is held there. The club has much to boast about this season, having seen the successful staging of the first three events, including the May 25 Caribbean Invasion meet, which after it’s second round in Barbados in August, is being led by Jamaica’s David Summerbell, before the third and final round in Guyana in November. Record attendance, improved facilities and amenities, close racing, greater exposure in the media and an increasing number of competitors with better prepared cars and bikes are some of the more significant achievements this year, which sees the culmination of title sponsor LIME’s three year sponsorship deal.

Drivers in the different categories contested (Improved Production in classes 27, 33, 37 and 45, Modified Production classes 1,2 and 3, LIME Thundersport and the motorcycle class) are literally racing down to the wire in the chase for championship points, with several clear leaders forging ahead of the pack. Favorite to win the IP27 category which is the first race run on race days, is defending champion Stephen Bansie in his Scotiabank Group/Vital Med Distributors Ltd Subaru Impreza WRX Sti. Chris Campbell, driving the Stoplight Wholesale Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV prepared by Casa’a Garage, has been the driver on the rise to stardom, with multiple wins this season in the MP3 and Thundersport classes, garnering the respect and admiration of a host of fans who have witnessed his skillful and aggressive driving that has catapulted him into the limelight after only his second full year of competition.

Don’t miss the fast paced action as teams from across Jamaica vie for supremacy on what is considered the English speaking Caribbean’s most challenging circuit.
The meet is sponsored by Lime, Pegasus Hotel, Power 106, KLAS Sports Radio, IRIE FM, National Supplies, TVJ and The Gleaner.
